Ceylon black tea is one of the country’s specialties. It has a crisp aroma reminiscent of citrus, and is consumed in both unmixed and in blends. As it’s grown in numerous plantations, taste may vary by change of altitude in the grown area.
Ceylon green teas generally have the fuller body and the more pungent, rather malty, nutty flavour characteristic of the origin seed stock. It is mainly exported to North Africa and Middle Eastern markets.
Ceylon white tea, also known as “golden tips” or “silver tips” was first grown in Nuwara Eliya near Adam’s Peak between 2,200–2,500 meters. The tea is grown, harvested and rolled by hand whilst the leaves are dried and withered in the sun. It has a delicate and very light liquoring flavour with notes of pine & honey and a golden coppery infusion. ‘Virgin White Tea’ is also grown in the south of Sri Lanka.
